MONTREAL – The Canada Council for the Arts on Wednesday announced the eight artists who have received the Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts.
Montreal artist Louise Lemieux-Bérubé, who specializes in textiles, won the Saidi-Bronfman Prize. This award is described as the most prestigious award in the field of arts and crafts.
The Canadian Museum of History will also acquire one or more works by the recipient.
Michelle Jacques, curator of the Modern Remay Museum in Saskatoon, received the Distinguished Contribution Award, given to a person or group whose “extraordinary achievements (…) have had a real impact on the development of the visual arts, media arts or crafts.” .
Six artists won awards for artistic achievement, including Quebec contemporary art artist Dominique Blin and Montreal media art specialist Don Ritter.
Also honored were Toronto artists Barbara Astman and Greg Staats, Nunavut's Shuvinay Ashuna, and Marjorie Bocage of Duck Lake, Saskatchewan.
All recipients receive a $25,000 grant and the National Gallery of Canada will display their work in 2024.
