Washington Capitals signed striker Dylan Strom for one season for $3.5 million.
Coyotes’ third pick in the 2015 draft – after Connor McDavid (Edmonton) and Jack Eichel (Buffalo) – played 273 NHL games.
Last year with the Blackhawks, Strom scored 22 career goals and added 26 assists in 69 games.
The Mississauga, Ontario, team struggled to live up to expectations in Arizona, playing just 48 games in three seasons before being traded to Chicago’s Brendan Perlini in November 2018 for Nick Schmaltz.
While with Chicago, Strom had better times and averaged 0.68 points per game.
Strom is exiting a two-year, $3 million contract. A qualifying bid from Chicago would have cost the club $3.6 million.
The Capitals has already appointed Darcy Comber as their No. 1 goalkeeper and Charlie Lindgren as a backup.
The club offered new contracts to Marcus Johansson and Matt Irwin, as well as included two other Hawks alumni, Erik Gustafsson and Henrik Burgström.
Washington also got Ottawa Senators Conor Brown for a second-round pick in 2024.
