After 5 p.m., the thermometer still read 118 degrees Fahrenheit, almost 48 degrees Celsius. The city of Phoenix, Arizona (USA) is suffocating. Rosalia Licia lives in a mobile home. His air conditioning broke down. The single mother of five had no choice but to fix it, even if it cost her $800. “We had to find a solution for the children to find air conditioning to survive,” he explains. With very poor housing and very dangerous conditions, the situation has become untenable.
425 people died last year
At the city’s largest homeless camp, three weeks of sweltering heat have left bodies exhausted. Dana Page no longer has the strength to go to the local supermarket: “My body is so affected by all the handicaps. It’s dangerous to walk to the store”. Last year, 425 people died due to heat wave in the district. The heat wave is expected to last till at least July 28.
