A talented young man who was forced to leave his football team

A talented 15-year-old is being penalized in Trois-Rivières for his excellent academic performance.

Mathis Lapierre, who missed two school years, will have to stop playing soccer when he enters CEGEP this fall.

Rules set by the Réseau du sport du Québec (RSEQ) state that since he will have a high school diploma (DES), he will not be able to play on the Vert et Or team of Séminaire St- Joseph, even if Mathis is still of age 15 years old.

However, the teen is too young to join the Cégep de Trois-Rivières Diablos team.

His family asked for a waiver so that Mathis could continue to play for Séminaire St-Joseph, but his request was denied by the RSEQ.

“I still think it’s unfair because people who have difficulty, who are adults, can play football with their high school while I, it’s the opposite, I have ease in school and then they banned me from playing just because I’m ahead of the game,” Mathis Lapierre laments.

For the mother of a teenager, this predicament is unacceptable.

“I can’t believe that a gifted student is being asked to choose between an academic path that best suits them or a sport, and that is the message that the RSEQ sends,” says Ellen Brosseau.
