In the midst of the homelessness crisis that is hitting downtown Montreal hard, a 114-unit apartment building dedicated to these clients opened on Monday in Christine, between Saint-Catherine Street and René Levesque Street.
More than 80% of the units benefit from rent supplements, allowing residents to pay 25% of their income towards housing. The building in the Latin Quarter, which belongs to SHDM, will be operated by Accueil Bonneau.
“These are in a precarious situation that you are logged in, the couples are in a vulnerable situation, the people who come out of the DPJ, they are in a precarious situation and the people are in a vulnerable situation or in a dangerous situation”, explain VALÉRIE Plant.
The building will allow a social mix where men, women, couples, students, refugees, elderly people, indigenous people and people from the LGBTQ2+ community will coexist in this place that will provide psychosocial support.
“When you don't have an apartment anymore, you feel devastated and frustrated. You apply and when you're accepted, it's Christmas. It's like winning the lottery,” says Ms. Charette, the tenant.
An amount of $23.5 million has been allocated for the project.
