Tuesday evening Bloomberg I learned that Embracer Group AB is closing the Montreal studio Onoma (formerly Square Enix Montreal). The closure comes a few months after the studio was bought and a few weeks after it rebranded.
A representative from Embracer Group AB confirmed the news of the closure and about 200 employees lost their jobs. The company was to inform employees that some of them will be transferred to Eidos Montreal, according to sources Jason Schereir.
The move comes as a surprise, as Onoma, formerly known as Square Enix Montreal, was acquired by Embracer Group AB last May and recently announced its new name and brand.
Shutting down Onoma could be part of a larger cost-cutting initiative. Still according to sources BloombergEidos Montreal reportedly reduced the scope of an undisclosed project and canceled another.
