In May alone, 3,349 asylum applications and interceptions were made in Quebec. Since January 1, 2022, more than 13,000 migrants have crossed Roxham Road in Saint Bernard-de-Lacole, the irregular passage par excellence.
According to CIUSSS du Center-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, 1,150 of the 1,200 beds in the Montreal area are occupied by immigrants, notably at the Place Dupuis hotel.
“We are making great efforts to welcome new arrivals appropriately and give them opportunities, therefore waiting periods of more than 12 months are not acceptable. “I expect the federal government to maintain its commitment not to overburden our resources, which is why I have requested that some asylum seekers be moved to temporary accommodation in Ontario. To date, 520 asylum seekers have been transferred to hotels in Ontario.”
