Sydney | The prime minister of Australia’s most populous state resigned Friday in a corruption investigation that left Sydney residents without a leader for months.
Gladys Perezglian, head of government in the state of New South Wales, where Sydney is based, has announced that she will step down from parliament after the anti-corruption body announced it would launch an investigation into allegations of corruption against her.
“My resignation as prime minister could not have come at a bad time, but that moment is not entirely under my control,” Ms. Perezkillian told reporters.
“I do not want to divert attention from what should have been the top priority of the state government during this epidemic. It is the well – being of our citizens.
This conservative leader has been the head of state since 2017.
A state anti-corruption organization is investigating whether he supported his ex-boyfriend, a former member of parliament, in subsidizing his voters. Ms. Periglian denies the allegations.
About 5 million people have been locked up in Sydney since the end of June, which should be removed by October 11th.
The number of daily Govt-19 cases has begun to decline, but New South Wales is recording more than 800 a day.
