Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of former South African President Nelson Mandela, has died at the age of 43 from cancer, after years of commitment to developing prevention of this disease, her family announced on Tuesday.
Family spokesman Zwelapo Mandela said the writer was admitted to hospital on Monday as part of her treatment.
“Zoleka died… surrounded by her friends and family,” he said.
She was the daughter of Zindzi Mandela, the youngest daughter of anti-apartheid hero, and her first husband, Zwelibanzi Hlungwane.
His family said that recent examinations revealed that the disease had progressed significantly in many of his organs, including the brain and spinal cord.
“We mourn the passing of the beloved granddaughter of Winnie (Mandela) and Madiba” (Nelson Mandela’s nickname, editor’s note), the Nelson Mandela Foundation wrote in a message posted on social networks.
“His work to raise awareness about cancer prevention and his steadfast commitment to ending the shame surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all,” she added.
