You Can Now Buy Dell XPS 13 Plus With Ubuntu Linux 22.04

Dell has been selling some of the best Linux laptops for over a decade now, and right after the HP Dev One, Dell is releasing an updated Linux version of the XPS 13 Plus.

Dell was already selling the XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition, which is largely unchanged from the Windows XPS 13 Plus that arrived earlier this year, except that it comes with Ubuntu Linux 20.04 LTS instead of Windows. Starting in August, Dell will ship the XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition with a newer software experience than Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, and people who have already purchased the Developer Edition will receive the same enhanced update.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus optionally comes with Ubuntu Linux preinstalled, starting at $1,289.00. If you order now, you will receive a Dell tested update for Ubuntu 22.04 in August.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus launched earlier this year as a superb contender to the best laptops, with 12th-generation Intel Core processors and a MacBook-like Touch Bar above the keyboard and touchpad that blends into the computer frame. It’s definitely a great looking laptop, but it’s received mixed reviews for its limited selection of ports (no headphone jack) and poor battery life.

Dell doesn’t just change the operating system: the developer version has an official Ubuntu certification from its developer Canonical. This means that everything should work perfectly, and since Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is installed by default, you will get updates for “up to 10 years”. You can also upgrade to a non-LTS version of Ubuntu, or even other Linux distributions, but you may have a less stable experience.

Dell has also confirmed that the regular XPS 13 Plus has the same certification as Ubuntu, so if you install Ubuntu 22.04 on an existing Windows model (after improvements completed in August), you should get a similar experience. Ubuntu 22.04 was released in April and includes the GNOME 42 desktop environment, updated multitasking, Linux kernel 5.15, and many other improvements.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus Developer Edition starts at $1,289 in the US, with the base configuration offering 8GB of RAM, a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1240P processor, and a 13.4-inch 1080p touchscreen And a 512GB NVMe SSD. Same Windows 11 Home laptop, $160 cheaper than Windows 11 Pro laptop. It is assumed that Canonical does not charge the same license fee as Microsoft.
