When should I tip and how much should I tip? There is no consensus among Canadians on these questions, according to a new survey by Research Co.

A third (33%) of Canadians believe that food servers deserve a tip in all situations, even if the service they provided was poor. Conversely, more than three in ten Canadians (31%) say they will not leave a tip if they receive below average service at a table service restaurant when their server is visibly unoccupied.
Do we have to leave a certain extra amount when preparing our meal to take home or when ordering in a restaurant without table service? These questions are also not unanimous according to the results obtained in the Canadian Company Survey.
More than half (53%) of Canadians say they never tip when visiting a snack bar, and more than two in five never tip when visiting a cafeteria-style restaurant (49%), a restaurant where they order food. They chose their own (48%) or a coffee shop (43%).
Regardless, the majority of people (70%) agree that “food servers can’t make ends meet on their own, it’s important to tip them.”
The study was conducted online from December 10-12 among 1,000 adults in Canada.
