Vaccination Passport in Action: Clear Guidelines and Flexibility Required

Canadian manufacturers want the government to issue clearer guidance on the use of the vaccine passport and to require flexibility for people who have been vaccinated twice.

According to a survey conducted by Manufacturers and Exporters in Canada (MEC) and Quebec (MEQ), more than two out of three Canadian manufacturers (69%) use a vaccine passport in their business, but less than a quarter of them currently need one.

The main concern of manufacturers questioned on this topic relates to “legal risks”.

“Currently there is uncertainty about the use of the vaccination passport in the workplace. Companies want to make sure they have the freedom to move forward. They don’t want to find themselves dealing with conflicts and fear losing employees if there is no clear direction,” explained Véronique Proulx, President and CEO of MEQ , in a press release on Friday, said they want to be able to appropriately manage risks with their employees, customers and suppliers.

Thus, clear government guidance on the use of this passport within businesses is required to allow employers to better manage risks related to external visitors.

MEQ, which represents 1,100 factories in Quebec, is asking public health to boost flexibility for workers who have received two doses of one of the vaccines.

“Currently, no workplace flexibility has been announced by Public Health and [Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST)]. We are well aware that the variables exist, but we must encourage people who are doubly vaccinated by allowing them flexibility, such as returning to work in person or even taking lighter preventative measures,” Ms Proulx added.
