Towards a new tranche of Canadian aid to Ukraine?

Canada may soon announce a new tranche of aid to Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hinted indirectly Sunday at the conclusion of the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

When asked by Global News that Canada did not announce a new tranche of aid during the G7, Mr Zelensky came to the defense of the relationship between Ottawa and Kiev.

“I would like you to understand that we have a strong relationship with Canada. We are working on something that probably cannot be commented on publicly,” let the president hover in response.

Mr. Zelensky benefited from being invited to the G7 for discussions with several leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

According to a report from the president on Saturday, the Canadian-Ukrainian discussions included “future security and defense cooperation” and a mission to train the Canadian Armed Forces for Ukrainian soldiers.

Unlike other countries such as the United States, Canada did not announce new military aid to Ukraine during the G7, only imposing new economic sanctions on Russia.

However, Mr. Trudeau has hinted that he is open to helping train Ukrainian pilots, following the US green light to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

“We will not hesitate to continue to ensure that Russia cannot impose the law of the strongest,” the prime minister stressed, answering questions from reporters during the closing of the G7.
