The Detroit Pistons didn’t hesitate to break out the checkbook for the services of head coach Monty Williams, so much so that in 2023-2024 he will be paid more than all NHL players…with one exception.
Williams, the 2022 NBA Coach of the Year, has signed a six-year, $78.5 million deal, according to ESPN expert Adrian Wojnarowski.
Thus, the 51-year-old will earn an annual salary of just over $13 million, making him the highest-paid coach in Silver Tour history.
By comparison, in the NHL only one player has a more lucrative active contract: Nathan McKinnon. The Colorado Avalanche center will receive $16.5 million in 2023-2024, the second season of the eight-year and $100.8 million deal he signed after leading the Avs to the Stanley Cup.
Boston Bruins winger David Pasternak will earn $13 million, slightly less than the Pistons’ new pilot. Dougie Hamilton, Seth Jones, Alexander Ovechkin, Kirill Kaprizov, Alex Pietrangelo, Zach Verensky, Adam Fox and Alexander Barkov are the only other athletes who will receive at least $12 million in the upcoming campaign.
In the NBA, at least 88 players have a valid contract for the 2023-2024 season worth more than McKinnon. At the top of the pyramid, Stephen Curry will earn approximately $52 million.
