The Airline Pilots Association has issued a three-day ultimatum to WestJet to come to an agreement on a new contract, or a strike will be announced on Friday, endangering the flights of thousands of passengers.
The union said pilots would be off duty from 3 a.m., which could ground all scheduled flights.
“Flight disruption is never ideal, especially with the tremendous support we have received from our guests, and we want to continue contributing to our company’s success by helping WestJet achieve its growth strategy,” the manager commented. Bernard Lywall Society, press release.

Last Friday, WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech said he planned to reach an agreement with the union.
“While recovery is still underway from the financial pressures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have provided an agreement that is reasonable and addresses the key concerns of our respected pilots, including job security, working conditions, and a substantial salary increase,” he pleaded.
The Calgary-based carrier completed its acquisition of Sunwing Vacations and Sunwing Airlines on May 1, primarily with the goal of developing its activities in eastern Canada.
