The Maple Leafs were fined $100,000

The National Hockey League (NHL) announced that it fined the Toronto Maple Leafs $100,000 on Wednesday for violating the travel rules included in the collective agreement.

According to the agreement between the Bateman Arena and the Players Association, no travel is permitted for any team on December 26.

However, as reported by Sportsnet, the Queen City squad took the road to St. Louis at 10:30 p.m. on Boxing Day, to take on the Blues there on Tuesday.

Since the trip from Toronto to St. Louis can take up to two hours, the Leafs decided that spending the night in Missouri was more rewarding than getting there in the wee hours of December 27th.

It was a costly day for the Toronto organization. Head coach Sheldon Keefe was fined $25,000 for his behavior towards the umpires during the game between his team and the Blues, and the coach briefly commented on the situation.

“Listen: You can get emotional during a game. I’m as competitive as anyone. But when the game is over, especially when you get the two points, you don’t think about it too much,” Keefe said, according to Sportsnet.
