The iceberg of the Strugatsky brothers has finally appeared in France

Brothers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, legendary in Russia, saw their works published out of order and in translations that were not always consistent in France. For the first time, one of their major courses, “Le Cycle du Midi”, can be accessed in one massive volume.

Russian science fiction is a land that is still largely unknown. An iceberg appears, the work of brothers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, who there was considered a classic that transcends the concept of genre and has inspired many films, including the very famous lurking, by Andrei Tarkovsky. Of this iceberg, only a part was visible in France, and very little remains.

The few translated novels were incoherent in the collections or from publishers who often did not follow through on this effort: Le Rayonfantastique, Présence du futur, L’âge d’homme, Fleuve noir … and so the three books whose hero is the explorer Maxime Kammerer (The inhabited island, the ladybug in the Antilles, the waves extinguish the wind) They are posted with different translations each time and without indicating their link, which makes reading them especially opaque if, say, you’re lucky enough to start with the last translation!

Heroes are human, not superman

Now, these novels compose a vast mural, midi cycle (a term denoting the height of humanity), an attempt to write a future that spanned the two brothers’ lives. The coherence of the project, which spanned over two centuries, the 21st and 22nd centuries, was unknown until then. By first publishing Part Two of This History of the Future between 1957 and 1991 (only texts relating to the twenty-second century were collected in this volume, which benefited from a new, unpublished translation of what was already published), the editions of Mnémos give it its rightful place.
