“[Cette] vanishement […] It raises fears of further service cuts across Quebec. This illustrates the urgent need to find new sources of predictable and sustainable funding for public transport. Users deserve frequent and reliable services! said Sarah F. Doyon, executive director of Trajectoire Québec, which advocates for the rights of Quebec public transit users.

Thus, the decrease in bus frequency announced by STM will affect 31 lines in total.

Thursday’s event, which will take place from 8 am to 9 am at the corner of Rue De Bleury and Rue De Maisonneuve near the Place-des-Arts station, aims to highlight the importance of increasing funding for STM and service offerings, which have been severely affected by the pandemic.

The funding shortfall would have resulted in an overall decline in services of 5% since 2018, Emmanuel Rondia, director general of the Montreal Regional Council of the Environment, said in a press release.

At the same time, home car use increased from 49.9% to 54.7% between 2016 and 2021.

“It is the exact opposite direction of the direction we have to take,” he added.

The statement concluded by saying that people “affected by the loss of this much appreciated service” are encouraged to “come together and reflect”.
