theRwandan authorities on Wednesday accused a fighter jet from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) of violating its airspace, in the latest episode in escalating tensions between Kigali and Kinshasa following a rebel offensive in eastern DRC.

In a statement released Wednesday night, the Rwandan government spokesperson’s office confirmed that “a Sukhoi SU-25 fighter jet from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) violated Rwandan airspace along Lake Kivu (West Rwanda) today (Wednesday) around 12:00 p.m. .

The statement said the plane immediately returned to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The government in Kigali added that “the Rwandan authorities once again protested to the Congolese government about airspace violations by Congolese fighter jets.”

At the beginning of November, the Rwandan government had already alleged that a Congolese fighter jet of the same type had violated its airspace and landed briefly at Rubavu Airport (an area also known as Gisenyi), in Western Province.
