Demonstration against Xi Jinping
A gray-haired man walked out of the embassy and tore down a protest sign demanding the removal of satirical posters of Chinese President Xi Jinping, British media reported. Guardian. On the demonstrators’ banners one could see caricatures of Xi Jinping or anti-Chinese Communist Party (CCP) inscriptions.
The activist confirmed to the BBC that he was attacked by people who came out of the embassy. “When we tried to stop them, they dragged me in and beat me up.”he said. “It’s ridiculous. They (his attackers, editor’s note) shouldn’t have done that. We should be free to say whatever we want here.”In England, he added.
The attack was widely condemned and calls for a strong response were made by activists and politicians across all political stripes in Britain. Alicia Kearns, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has asked the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of State“urgent investigation”. “ If the Chinese ambassador was summoned and an official beat the protesters, he should be expelled or prosecuted. she said on Twitter.
Open investigation and police patrol program
“This information is certainly very worrying. (…) Manchester Police acted immediately. (…) Their investigation is ongoing”, a Downing Street spokesman told reporters. “ Following this incident, police patrolling has been planned in this area. Police said.
The events took place on the opening day of the Communist Party Congress in Beijing, which should give President Xi Jinping a third term. “ We do not know the situation you are describing,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told AFP. “Chinese embassies and consulates in the UK always respect the laws of the host country”he added.
