February 11th is celebrated every year as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. On this occasion, Plan International Burkina Faso organized an educational conversation to share the outlets and opportunities for girls and young women aspiring to work in scientific fields in Burkina Faso.
Plan International’s representative in Burkina Faso, Elise Gigma, explained that it is necessary to promote equal participation of women in scientific and technical activities and in innovation to ensure equality and women’s empowerment.
She highlighted that Plan International’s new ambition is to see all girls as strong and committed to transforming the world.
” The purpose of this activity is to demystify scientific fields for better participation of girls and young women in scientific activities in Burkina Faso. The representation of women and girls in scientific research and engineering fields is low in Burkina Faso.
The 2019 Scientific Research Dashboard issued by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation shows a decrease in the representation of women (17.1%) in this field (March 7, 2022). All scientific structures include 2,272 researchers, teachers and scholars, 17.1% of whom are women. The number of researchers per million inhabitants is lower among women than among men (37 vs. 190). Elise Gigma said.
Through this activity, the aim was to encourage girls and young women to be interested in science by raising awareness among adolescent girls in order to encourage model scientists to exchange experiences and advice for the benefit of teenage girls.
The representative of the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Dr. Koussau Somme, welcomed this initiative by Plan International Burkina.
