The sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Kim Yo Jong, has warned that the agreement between the United States and South Korea to strengthen the nuclear deterrence against Pyongyang will only lead to “an even greater grave danger.”

Washington and Seoul on Wednesday warned North Korea against a nuclear attack that would prompt a response that would “end” the regime in Pyongyang, during a state visit by the South Korean president to the United States.
North Korea is convinced of the need for “further perfection” in its nuclear deterrence program, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Yo Jong responded, according to comments carried by the North’s KCNA news agency on Saturday.
“The more enemies continue to conduct nuclear exercises, the more they deploy nuclear weapons near the Korean Peninsula, and the more directly they exercise our right to self-defense,” Kim Yo Jong said.
South Korean President Yun Sok Yul and his US counterpart Joe Biden on Wednesday adopted the “Washington Declaration”, which significantly strengthens their cooperation in defense matters, including nuclear.
Among the actions outlined under the agreement, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine stopped in South Korea for the first time in four decades.
This agreement “will only contribute to putting peace and security in Northeast Asia and the world at greater risk, and therefore it is an act that cannot be welcomed in any way,” Kim Yo Jong continued.
North Korea has faced years of international sanctions to continue developing its nuclear and missile programmes, and has shown no sign of willingness to give up its arsenal, which it views as a safeguard against any attempt to overthrow the regime.
Pyongyang has conducted a record series of launches this year, including a test of its first solid-fuel ballistic missile, a major technological breakthrough for Kim Jong Un’s armed forces.
