Nancy Pelosi on Taiwan: Betrayal of American Commitments

Despite strong opposition from the Chinese people and unfavorable advice from political and academic circles in the US and other countries, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan on August 2. The visit undoubtedly constitutes blatant interference in Chinese internal affairs. China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity have been violated by the US side, which has once again betrayed its commitments on the Taiwan issue.

In 1971, United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 decided to restore the People’s Republic of China in all its rights and recognize representatives of its government as the sole legitimate representatives of China. It also decides on the immediate expulsion of Chiang Kai-shek’s representatives from their illegally occupied seats in the United Nations and all affiliated organizations. This consensus was respected by the international community. So far, 181 countries have recognized that there is only one China and that Taiwan is an integral part of China.

The three Sino-US joint statements constitute the political commitment of the two sides, and the one China policy is the political foundation of Sino-US relations. The United States recognizes the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government in China, and in this context, the American people maintain cultural, commercial, and other unofficial ties with the people of Taiwan. All these are written in black on white.

Hypocritical promise

Yet for geopolitical purposes, the US side is notorious for its poor record of dissonance between words and actions. Take the example of the One-China Policy and the three Sino-US Joint Statements.

On July 28, when the US President spoke on the phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Joe BidenHe reiterated that the United States’ one-China policy has not and will not change, and that the United States does not support Taiwan independence.

What a strange sight! Some in the US have repeatedly affirmed the country’s adherence to the one-China policy, while allowing one of its most prominent political figures to lead a delegation to Taiwan on a US military aircraft. Isn’t this a betrayal of their word?

In a world plagued by multiple crises in various forms, a responsible nation must work with the international community to resolve issues that undermine global peace and security, rather than fomenting them. However, some in the United States continue to provoke China and destabilize security and peace in the Taiwan Strait, even as they are committed to peace. These are the people who have raised tensions in the Taiwan Strait and posed serious challenges to regional and global peace and security.

On the Taiwan issue, the position of the Chinese government and people is unwavering, and China’s determination to uphold China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is always firm. Those who play with fire will eventually get burned. We hope the US side can match its words with actions.
