Methane reduction: A Quebec company has opened a facility in the United States

Quebec-based Biothermica Technologies has used technology developed in the province to dilute methane in the vented air of one of Virginia’s largest metallurgical coal mines.

Owned by Australian public company Coronado Global Resources, the mine will benefit from thermal oxidation technology, which, once preheated, enables the oxidation of methane diluted in vented air without the use of polluting fossil fuels.

The project, which was implemented last July, will help reduce emissions from the mine by 300,000 TeqCO2, equivalent to removing around 65,000 petrol cars from the roads.

“This project will reduce our carbon footprint related to methane emissions at our Buchanan mine and contribute to our commitment to reduce our GHG emissions in line with the global commitment on methane launched by the US and EU at COP26,” said Bob Cline, VP Business Development and Engineering, Coronado Global Resources, Thursday. said in a statement.

Remember that methane represents 20% of all greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by the planet and the US is one of the main emitters.

“Other projects are being discussed in mines other than coal mines in the United States and elsewhere in the world. Our company is part of the solution to global warming,” said Dominic Kay, vice president of Air and Technologies.
