Mazda lifts the veil on its new SUV, CX-50 2023

Consumers interested in purchasing a compact SUV will have more options starting in the spring of 2022 from Mazda’s side. In addition to the CX-5, this compact SUV that has been updated over time but still dates back to 2017 in its current form, the manufacturer is releasing a new model that will be added to the existing range. It’s about Mazda CX-50 2023, a new compact SUV designed to appeal to buyers looking for a more adventurous approach.

No, it will not replace the CX-5, it will complement it. The purpose of Mazda CX-50 2023 is to attract more buyers looking for an adventure car, without sacrificing driving pleasure, while the CX-5 focuses more on urban areas.

In terms of dimensions, the CX-50 is a little wider, a little longer and above all, less than the current CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-50 uses the same architecture as the Mazda3 and the CX-30.

In terms of style, no one will be surprised. The line is definitely Mazda, with a luxurious aspect that we know from the brand’s latest models. To distinguish the adventurous side, the hood is long, the wheel arches are crisp, the tracks are wide, and the tail line is defined, not to mention the decals plastered everywhere. Note the horizontal turn signals at the bottom of the bumper, taken directly from the CX-30, that define the manufacturer’s new visual signature.

The interior design takes a similar approach to that offered by the Mazda3 and CX-30 with a driver-oriented design. Air vents are centered in the cockpit and the infotainment screen is positioned above the dashboard to surround the driver. A new “Terra Cotta” color is offered to accentuate the feeling of luxury on board, as well as a panoramic sunroof, a first for a Mazda SUV.

At the rear, the seats feel more inviting than those on the CX-5 and the rear doors keep a nearly 90-degree opening, for easier access to the roof. No indication of trunk size was detected.

Not surprisingly, the CX-50 used engines known to the manufacturer. Right from the start there’s a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, whose power hasn’t been confirmed, but which produces 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque on the other models. Buyers can optionally choose the 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which is good for 250 horsepower with 93 octane petrol and 310 pound-feet of torque. All versions come with an outdated six-speed automatic transmission and are equipped with all-wheel drive.

The CX-50 also offers Mi-Drive (Mazda Intelligent Drive), a drive mode selector that aims to make the car as good on the road as it is off the lane. The four modes are: sport, normal, off-road, and towing. The choice of drive modes, like other systems of its kind, allows adjustment in the programming of the transmission, steering calibration and the response of the all-wheel drive system.

Mazda also took the opportunity to announce the eventual introduction of the CX-50 in a hybrid version, but has not announced a specific timeline.

The CX-50 will be assembled at Mazda-Toyota’s joint plant in Alabama beginning in January 2022. It will arrive at dealerships in the spring of 2022.
