(Pocket-lint) – Introducing Google Meet Direct translation with subtitles for video calls.

Google started testing the feature last year. It works on the web or from a mobile phone, but can only translate English into French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. However, it is a step towards more inclusive video calling, as it removes any potential barriers to language proficiency.

One can imagine that it will be useful in practical or training meetings, as well as in education, but also in one-on-one calls with friends.

How to use Google Meet Live Translate

To start using Translate Live Translate in Google Meet you need to turn on Translate in Settings first, then set it to English and turn on Subtitles. You can choose from four localized language options.

  1. On your computer, open Google Meet.
  2. From a meeting, tap More options > Settings > Closed captions.
  3. Enable “Subtitles” and set the language to English.
  4. Check “Subtitles”.
  5. Choose a language: French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

Why try Google Meet Live Translate?

Standard captions can be used by anyone using Google Meet, but currently translated live captions are only available for the following Workspace versions: Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Education Plus.

It unfolds gradually, so it may take a few weeks before you see it.
