He stole $215,000 and disappeared for 52 years

The US Marshals Service announced Friday that it has identified one of the US’s most wanted fugitives, who was implicated in a robbery 52 years ago.

On Friday, July 11, 1969, Theodore John Conrad, who was a cashier at a National Community Bank branch in Cleveland, Ohio, worked off work like every day, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Marshals.

However, at the end of the day, he walked out with $215,000 (equivalent to $1.7 million in 2021) in a paper bag, and then disappeared.

It wasn’t until the following Monday, when the 20-year-old failed to show up for work, that bank employees checked the contents of the safe and realized the money was missing.

According to the US Marshals Service, Ted Conrad has become obsessed with the movie “The Thomas Crown Affair” in which a millionaire businessman enjoys robbing banks for fun.

The cashier also allegedly bragged to his friends that it would be easy to steal money from the bank, and even told them that he was planning to do so.

The case of Theodore John Conrad has puzzled more than one investigator over the past 50 years.

This story has already appeared in such American programs as “America’s Most Wanted” and “Unsolved Mysteries”.

The case remained unresolved until last week when an American field marshal from Cleveland visited Boston, Massachusetts.

US Marshals confirmed that the man, named Thomas Randley of Linfield, Massachusetts, was in fact Theodore J. Conrad, the statement said.

The cashier has lived in the suburbs of Boston since 1970. Ironically, the young man moved near the place of filming of the original “Thomas Crown Affair”.

Thomas Randell, real name Theodore John Conrad, died of lung cancer in May 2021.
