MEXICO CITY – Officials of Mexico’s most important soccer tournament have suspended all matches scheduled for Sunday, a day after fierce fighting between spectators during the match between the hosts of Queretaro FC and CF Atlas de Guadalajara, the defending champions.
In a statement, Mexican Football Federation officials said they regretted and condemned these events “which go against the spirit of football in Mexico”.
Saturday’s match was interrupted in the 62nd minute when several fights broke out in the stands. Security personnel opened barricades giving access to the square so that spectators, including women and children, could escape from the stands.
In videos posted early Sunday morning, Queretaro state governor Mauricio Corrie said 14 men had been taken to hospital. Four of them sustained minor injuries, and eight others were in stable condition.
However, two others were seriously injured and were in critical condition.
They could be two men lying on the ground, unconscious, and repeatedly kicked, according to videos posted on social media.
