sSixty-four years after the launch of Sputnik 1, the outskirts of the Earth are trash. Several hundred million pieces of debris over one millimeter in size (for a total mass of 5,900 tons) of explosions and collisions circulate around the Earth relentlessly. Just a lightning bolt thrown at several thousand kilometers per hour can penetrate the International Space Station (ISS) like butter.

Hence the uproar of the recent announcement that an old Russian spy satellite was destroyed by a missile during an experiment. Astronauts on the International Space Station were asked to shut themselves up for a few hours in the Russian and American spacecraft that docked at the station to deal with any eventuality. Both NASA and the European Space Agency are observing…
