Eight supporters have been excluded from Sunday’s Australia Cup final in Sydney, the Australian federation said. The crowd was marked by Nazi salutes and Croatian nationalist chants. Australian Premier League club Macarthur FC competed against Sydney United 58, a semi-professional club founded as Sydney Croatia in 1957 by Australians of Croatian descent.
During the match (2-0) won by Macarthur FC, supporters performed Nazi salutes and part of the stands sang a far-right Croatian nationalist song, used by the fascist Ustashi movement in the 1930s. Even before the start of the game, the spectators cheered the ceremony “Welcome Home” Celebrating Australia’s Aboriginal connection to country.
Football Federation Australia said: “We strongly condemn the acts of minorities.” Among 16,141 supporters at Sydney’s Compbank Stadium. Last month, many Eintracht Frankfurt supporters entered the Vélodrome stadium to perform a Nazi salute during the OM-Frankfurt Champions League match.
