Among a Colombian mother and a Polish father, Rachel Ziegler, now 20, was chosen to play Maria in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” whose team tested more than 30,000 candidates.
The team especially liked the voice of the young woman, who has already distinguished herself in several local productions of musicals in New Jersey, where she belongs.

“His strength, intelligence and optimism will become integral to rediscovering the joy of a classic Disney fairy tale,” explained the director, who has notably directed two parts of the Spider-Man saga, “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012) and “The Amazing Spider-Man: The Fate of the Hero” (2014 ).
Disney said production of the film is scheduled to begin in 2022. “Snow White” is an adaptation of a story written by the Brothers Grimm, two German linguists who published the first edition in 1812.

Mulan (2020) and Aladdin (2019), which are also live-action releases, featured leading roles of variety.
Still unknown to virtually the general public, Rachel Ziegler will make one of her most famous career debuts in history, as well as the roles of Snow White and West Side Story in Shazam! Fury of the Gods”, a sequel to DC Comics’ Shazam! Expected in 2023.
