Discover and learn the power of flowers

Discover and learn the power of flowers

During my holidays I was able to learn more about plants thanks to Picture This. An app that turns out to be very versatile and has more tools to help you on a daily basis.

At first glance, this image concept is not revolutionary. Google Lens already has an AI feature that allows you to identify a plant by a simple photo. You are then sent to the Wikipedia page of the respective plant, allowing you to learn more. In the Picture This app, available on Android and iOS, it is possible to identify every manufacturer you come across, but not only.

If you photograph the plants in your home, it is possible to add them to a tab called “My Garden”. thanks to that, imagine this It gives you a set of tips to maintain your plant, with the amount of sun required and the frequency of watering. Then, each plant has a card where you can take notes and even set reminders to water or fertilize.

Reliable but not flawless

I downloaded Picture This during a trip to Andalusia, where we visited beautiful gardens in the Alhambra and the Alcázar Palace. I admit that botany is not my specialty and some plants were sometimes unknown to us. So we asked for artificial intelligence for a mobile application that recognizes the respective plant quite easily, and also gives its scientific name. As expected in 2022, the level of AI is good enough not to fail.

Don’t think that this can’t be taken for granted. If the image contains unexpected elements, the application software may already be scammed. For example, the ficus in our apartment was decorated with a small mushroom wreath and suffered from some bite marks from our cat. Two items the app associates with a disease… All you have to do, though, is take another photo to correct this error.

In terms of daily care, the application is very comprehensive, giving a resistant temperature for each plant, but also a guide to pruning, harvesting and common pests.

Useless premium, but everywhere

Like YouTube, the app will ask you every time you open it to opt in or out of the premium version which costs €32.99 per year. Know that you have been offered a 7-day free trial, but it is not mentioned. In fact, it is possible to meet with garden experts to give you a diagnosis of your plants, but also to consult with step-by-step maintenance. Books on gardening and flowers are also available.

In its free version, PictureThis is pretty much self-contained with a wide range of features available. Among the additional items, you will be able to select poisonous plants to protect your pets. In addition, each plant identified has a very complete profile.

You are entitled to questions and answers about species, advice from gardeners, associated poems and even symbols for learning the language of plants. Rising coquettish, it is possible to share your photos with your loved ones on social networks such as Facebook or Twitter. In short, Picture This is one of the many apps out there for Plant identification, such as PlantNet. It will be just as useful at home as it is outside.
