Demonstrations in Peru | Opening an investigation into “genocide” against the president

(Lima) The Peruvian Attorney General’s Office announced, on Tuesday, the opening of an investigation into “genocide” against the country’s President Dina Boloart and a number of senior officials for suppressing anti-government demonstrations that have left 40 people dead since December.

State Prosecutor Patricia Benavides decided to “open a preliminary investigation against President Dina Boloart, President of the Council of Ministers Alberto Otarola, Minister of the Interior Victor Rojas and Minister of Defense Jorge Chavez,” the prosecution announced on Twitter.

This enquête concerne des faits de « génocide, homicide qualifié and blessed graves, commis pending les manifestations des mois de december 2022 et janvier 2023 in les régions d’Apurimac, La Libertad, Punon, Junin, Arequipa et Ayacucho », at- he adds.

The investigation also targeted former President of the Council of Ministers Pedro Angulo and former Minister of the Interior César Cervantes, who were part of Dina Boloart’s government from December 7 to 21. A total of 22 people died in the protests during those two weeks.

At least 40 people have been killed and more than 600 injured in Peru in the protests that followed the ouster and arrest on December 7 of left-wing President Pedro Castillo, who is accused of attempting a coup to try to dissolve the parliament that was about to remove him from office.

The demonstrators are calling for the departure of MI Bulwart, who succeeded Mr. Castillo, and promptly hold snap elections.

The center of the protests is the Aymara (indigenous people) region of Puno, on the border with Bolivia and on the shores of Lake Titicaca.
