Who should/play with Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki in the Canadians season opener on October 12?

The question was put to committee members on “L’Après-match LNH” on Monday evening, just moments after the club’s fifth defeat during the preparatory calendar.

For Michel Bergeron, the choice is clear.

“I was going to go with Mike Hoffman. Last year, he played a few games in Unit One and Martin St. Louis liked his game, even saying he’s getting better defensively.

The idea may seem surprising in the context where the 68th player doesn’t know there’s a big training camp yet. Some even see it as a potential candidate for Game 1 Press Fair.

Then Dave Morissette stepped in, clearly in a row with his teammate.

“Hoffman can’t be an addition to these guys! Who’s going to get the disc?”

Birgi had an answer ready.

“It’s every turn, for that matter,” said the former Nordic coach.

“Hoffmann has a lot of experience. We must also not forget that he is untouchable. In case of a good start to the season on his part, he might be a bargaining chip…”
