Capitals make a big decision about Ovechkin

The Washington Capitals won’t begin the rebuilding process until forward Alex Ovechkin breaks the record for most goals scored in NHL history.

Owner Ted Leonsis told ESPN.

Heading into Tuesday’s game against the Blackhawks in Chicago, Ovechkin has scored 797 goals. He is therefore 97 goals from the mark held by the legendary Wayne Gretzky (894).

“Ovi” is also four goals from the second place in history, currently occupied by Geordie Howe (801).

“I’m sure there will be an influx of young players, but we’re not going to rebuild the squad,” Leonsis said. For us, rebuilding is when you look into the eyes of the players, coaches and fans and say we are going to be really bad. If we get really bad, I don’t think Alex will break the record.”

The millionaire revealed that this aspect came to light in Ovechkin’s recent contract negotiations. Last summer, the 37-year-old Russian signed a new five-year deal worth $9.5 million per year.

“He wants to do this [battre le record] Leonsis said the right way. Alex said, “I’m not going to be a third-line player who plays 8 to 10 minutes a game and comes on strong to score goals. That’s not what I want to do. Promise me you’ll keep the team competitive and they’ll compete for the playoffs.” For his part, he promised to stay in shape all the time and not get caught up in the record, but rather make the effort to win another Stanley Cup.
