Clarissa Shields united the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO middleweight titles against Savannah Marshall by unanimous decision after a thrilling 10-round show on Saturday in a crowded stadium in London.
The judges handed cards 96-94, 97-93 and 97-93 to the 27-year-old American, who holds her perfect record of 13-0, including 2 KOs.
“It’s not just a special moment for me, it’s also women’s boxing with the women who served tonight as the main leads; champion Savannah, Miquela, Alicia…” confirmed.
“There are a lot of great boxers who have come before us and paved the way, but it’s our turn tonight, and I think it’s worth the fight of the year,” Shields added.
They started fighting furiously and Shields in particular very quickly, but Marshall hit back with some powerful, albeit very inaccurate kicks as she was looking for the big shot.
The latter had some of her best moments from rounds 5 and 6 benefiting from her size and good body shots, but Shields was generally more functional, versatile, and full of cool.
Shields was cut above her right eye in the eighth round of a rematch, 10 years after her first amateur game, which Marshall won (12-1, 10 KOs).
Baumgardner Meyer serves his first defeat
Alicia Baumgardner inflicted the first defeat on Michaela Mayer of her career by winning by split decision in the semi-finals.
Two judges gave cards 96-95 in Baumgardner’s favour, and the other was 97-93 in Mayer’s favour.
Baumgardner (13-1, 7 KOs) has already held the WBC belt in the category since removing top seed Terry Harper, but added the WBO and IBF belt.
