World No. 4 Caroline Garcia overturned a poor start to finally beat Germany’s Laura Siegmund (158th) 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the round of 16 at the Australian Open. The only French representative.
“She played well and used my ball speed well,” admitted the 29-year-old Lyonnais, who will face Poland’s Magda Linet (45th) or Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (18th) for a place in the quarter-finals.
Unable to set up his game in the first set (4 successful strokes, 16 unforced errors) against an opponent who had won everything, Garcia had to wait for the second set to recover his skills on serve. Set up everywhere.
But Siegmund hung on, not making it easy for his opponent.
So when Garcia took a 4-3 lead in the third set, he had to fight to keep his own face.
She finally broke Sigmund’s serve on her second match point and when the German had three chances to win her match.
The Australian major is historically one of his least successful of the four: he’s only reached the round of 16 there once (2018), and lost in the first round last year.
