Android smartphones of the future could support many ESIM modules – Phandroid

Most of us have a primary phone number. Some of us may have two – one for work and one for personal, but some may have more for some reason. Phones nowadays usually support dual SIM but this has a physical limitation because creating more SIM card slots will end up taking up space in the phone.

Fortunately, it looks like Google may lay the groundwork for Android to support multiple eSIMs in the future, according to a report from Esper. Now, just because eSIMs are not physical does not mean that you can have an unlimited number of them. That’s why it’s very rare to see phones that actually support dual eSIMs.

According to the report, it appears that in Android 13 there is an app for Google patent filed in 2020 This allows the use of multiple SIM profiles in one integrated SIM. You can think of this as a CPU, where the chipset itself is physical but has been split into multiple cores to improve efficiency and performance.

This means that in the future, future versions of Android may support multiple eSIMs. It would also allow speaker makers to permanently remove the SIM card slot and use that extra space for other components, like bigger, better cameras or higher capacity batteries.

Nothing official has been announced yet, and while it has been spotted in Android 13, it may not necessarily be the final cut, but we might hear more about it in Google I / O conference in the coming months.
