An 'unprecedented' response to North Korea's nuclear test

An ‘unprecedented’ response to North Korea’s nuclear test

The United States, Japan and South Korea warned on Wednesday that a North Korean nuclear test would lead to an “unprecedented response with force,” and also vowed to show unity after multiple missile launches by the communist regime in Pyongyang.

After talks in Tokyo, the three countries’ deputy foreign ministers clearly pledged to strengthen their deterrence in the region.

“We have agreed to further enhance cooperation (…) so that North Korea will immediately end its illegal activities and resume denuclearization talks,” South Korean Cho Hyun-dong said.

“The three countries agreed on the need for an unprecedented response with force if North Korea conducts its seventh nuclear test,” he told reporters.

Seoul and Washington have repeatedly warned that Pyongyang may be on the verge of another nuclear test, for the first time since 2017, after a series of ballistic missile launches in recent weeks.

A missile flew over Japan last month and North Korea has separately claimed to have conducted tactical nuclear exercises.

US Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said “all of these behaviors are dangerous and deeply destabilizing” and urged North Korea “to refrain from further provocations.”

Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Takeo Mori noted that “the intensification of North Korea’s nuclear and missile activities (…) constitutes a clear and serious challenge to the international community.”

He added that the three countries agreed to “strengthen deterrence in our region with the aim of denuclearizing North Korea.”
