World Hockey Championship: Latvia wins first medal against USA

TAMPERE, Finland — Defender Kristian Rubins scored his second goal of the game 1:22 into overtime to lift Latvia to a 4-3 win over the United States and win the bronze medal at the championships.

This is the first time in its history that Latvia has placed in the top-3 at this event. The country has never done better than seventh place, a feat achieved three times.

For their part, the USA missed out on the bronze medal for the second year in a row.

The U.S. team proved insurmountable by winning the first eight games of the tournament, and in overtime, this time against Germany, before falling 4-3 in the semifinals on Saturday.

The Rubins scored the tying goal with 5:39 left in the third period before scoring the game-winning goal.

Roberts Bukarts and Janice Jakes also hit the mark for Latvia.

Rocco Grimaldi managed two of America’s goals each time.

Then, 6:19 into the third period, Matt Coronado gave the USA its first lead of the game.

Canada will face Germany in Sunday’s final.
