Quebec’s Laila Fernandez was eliminated from the Charleston tournament on Wednesday. Fernandez was defeated 7-5, 7-6 in the second round of the tournament by Spaniard Paula Badosa.
Fernandez fumbled a set point in the second set tiebreak, before seeing his opponent complete the job with the next two points. Badosa needed 1 hour and 52 minutes to win.
The 20-year-old Lavaloise was messy for much of the match against the Spaniard. In particular, she committed an impressive set of seven double faults, to Padosa’s only one. In addition, the latter was much more effective than her on her first and second serve.
Fernandez definitely stayed in the match throughout, but never quite managed to break through the Badosa match. The Maple Leaf delegate was limited to two serving spells on four occasions, while her 25-year-old opponent converted three of her ten break attempts.
In her first tournament match, Fernandez defeated Evgenia Rodina in straight sets.
Badusa, 33rd in the world, is seeded 12th in the tournament. In the next round, Badusa was set with Diana Schneider, after a sudden fall to Varonika Kudermitova.
In the women’s doubles, Fernandez and American Taylor Townsend beat Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa and Alicja Rosolska 6-4, 6-3.
On the other hand, Ontario’s Katherine Sepov will be bidding for her ticket to the round of 16 singles of the evening against fourth seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland at the tournament.
