Three-time Olympic gold medalist Kayleigh McKeown of Australia captured the 200m backstroke world record in Sydney on Friday, now four months before the start of the next world championships with a time of 2min 3sec 14. Swimming.
The 21-year-old swimmer also holds the 100m backstroke world record, bettering the previous benchmark time set at the New South Wales regional championships by American Regan Smith (2:03.35) at the 2019 Worlds.
In 2021, during the Tokyo Olympics, McCown won the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 4×100 medley relay. He won gold in the 200m backstroke at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest.
“After the Games, I struggled to get back into swimming,” McKeown said, as quoted by Australian media. “But my love for the sport has returned, and it just goes to show that a happy swimmer is a fast swimmer.”
“I don’t need to change anything in my training regime, I’m happy,” he added.
The 2023 edition of the Worlds will be held in Fukuoka in July.
