Women’s Tennis Players: Bianca Andreescu and Rebecca Marino present to Guadalajara

Quebec’s Leila Fernandez lost in three sets to world 14th racket Belinda Bencic in the first round of the Guadalajara Championships in Mexico on Monday.

Fernandez, ranked 41 on the WTA rankings, lost 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 after a duel that took two hours and 46 minutes to play.

Fernandez lost her serve five times in the match and after equalizing by winning the second set of the tiebreak, she was unable to keep up with her opponent in the final set. Bencic will face Sloane Stevens in his next match.

Fernandez suffered the first loss in his career at the hands of Bencic, after he came out victorious in the first two meetings.

For their part, Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Rebecca Marino succeeded in their first matches.

Bianca Andreescu of Ontario scored an easy 6-2, 6-4 victory over Swiss Gilles Techmann in the first round of the tournament.

Andreescu, home to Mississauga, broke her opponent five times in seven and won 61 percent of the first serve points. The 22-year-old will now cross paths with Petra Kvitova.

British Columbia’s Rebecca Marino also won her first-round match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (2) over American Ann Lee.

Marino had 11 aces for just one double fault and converted three out of 10 break chances. Lee made five double faults and only scored one break on three occasions.

The player from Vancouver will face France’s Caroline Garcia, the 10th seed.
