Ukraine’s HC Donbass team announced on Sunday that they have reached a “mutual agreement” with Jalen Smereck to terminate his contract.

The 24-year-old American was subjected to a racist gesture by one of his opponents, Andrei Deniskin, in the middle of a September end match. The scene was shared on social networks, where he toured the hockey planet.
On Instagram, Smereck previously indicated that he would not play a single match in the Ukrainian league if Denyskin was not suspended or expelled from the league. The latter received insignificant automatic suspension for three games.
In a statement, the organization operating in Donetsk thanked Smereck for his work and wished him success in his future career. The latter had agreed with HC Donbass last July and will have played nine matches in all competitions with the team, collecting six points.
The native Detroit defender hasn’t announced his plans for the rest of his career. Never drafted into the National Hockey League, Smereck spent five seasons with the Tucson Roadrunners organization, in the Major League, between 2016 and 2021.
